This idea comes from my past and actual working experiences.

I’m working on a multi-national enterprise and before this; I worked on the Roaming Dept of a cell phone company here in Argentina.

Everyone here use English as a tool, but sometimes, the best way to communicate what you want to say, is in your own language. So, we often receive messages in Italian, Portuguese, French and so on.

There are a lot of we-based tools for text translation. But you may know as well as I do; that they are very poor quality; and that’s because a machine is in charge of that translation.

SO:

I was thinking on the creation of a world-wide collaborative community, where each member can translate certain texts from-and-to their native language.

This system is better than the usual machine-based; because the translations are going to be made by a human person; who knows a lot of terms, slang and can give a context to the text, in order to give it a more meaningful translation.

For instance:
We receive a Portuguese text to be translated to Czech. So, some user from Portugal translates this text to English (or Czech if he is able to do so); and someone from Czech Republic translates that into Czech. (From English version, or Portuguese if he is able to do so)

Pretty cool, uh?

Every user has points won by the quantity/quality of his translations; being that way, referents in their language.

Service is completely free for certain texts. You can be charged if a text is too large or complex. You can pay the service through Paypal or with your credit card.

As well new users become part of the project, teaching modules for languages can be created, forums, live chats, specific glossaries, and more tools to help members to evolve in their knowledge.

I think it could be a very useful tool, and it can be world-wide deployed, because people from around the world can become part of it.
